Snowpocalypse Cancels February 8th Meeting

In view of the cold and snowy weather, Monday night's meeting has been canceled. Not all streets have been plowed, and it is hard to say what tomorrow's driving situation will be. So, stay home, stay warm, stay safe.

Ann Holmes will be presenting a workshop on March 7 on Rhododendron Bud, French Fuse Applique: No sewing until you quilt it. Participants will be able to complete this small project during the workshop. The workshop will run from noon-6:00 p.m., and costs $40 + $5 for the pattern. If you would like to attend, please contact Carolyn H.

February Monthly Meeting - 02/08/2010

It's time once again for the Arlington QU monthly meeting! I finally made it to January's meeting and was glad to see everyone again and thanks for the warm welcome back! (This blog post is so stolen from Carol M's email!)

The February meeting of Arlington QU will take place Monday, February 8, 2010, at 7:30 p.m., in the Auditorium of Goodwin House at Baileys Crossroads. We hope to see all of you there.

At this month's meeting, Carolyn H. has a fascinating program planned and it will feature folks from our own chapter:

Jean W. - Creating New Small Quilts from Antique Fabrics

Gawd-awful Fabric Blocks
There have been some inquiries about the Ugly quilt fabrics, also know as the Gawd-awful fabric blocks. To make a block for this project, use the ugly fabric which you may have drawn a couple months ago, or use one of your own ugly fabrics. Make a 10 ½ inch block (will finish at 10 inches). Use any pattern and accompanying fabrics you wish. This is an ongoing project, so you may give your ugly block to Janet L., our president, whenever it is completed.

Arlington QU Photo Directory
Kerry B. plans to arrive at 7:00 Monday nite to provide more photo ops for the Directory. If you haven't heard - the Arlington QU Directory will be a hard copy production, with an OPTION to also have your photo published on the website. The goal is to help new members (and us ~~old farts~~ matured people who can't remember your name) figure out who you are! So send a photo by email, or come by and get photographed!

Does anyone know who made the folded boxes that were on the tables at our Christmas potluck? Linda B.l would like to know how to make them.

As usual, we all enjoy seeing what you are making. Please bring in your work for Show and Tell.

Challenge: What's for Lunch?

This is a new challenge project by our very own Kristy Dolbeare! Its called What's For Lunch? The goal is for projects to be "show ready" by the January 2010 meeting so they can be entered into the Annual QU Quilt show.

What's it about?

Its a fun challenge project that quilters of any level can participate in. The quilts can be as simple or as advanced as the quilter chooses. It will be so fun to see the creativity of each of our members!

Instructions:

Place 6 coordinating fat quarters in a small brown lunch bag. **
Please use 100% cotton quilting fabric, pre-washed.
Brown lunch bags will be provided at the May meeting. If you are unable to attend the May meeting, you may provide your own brown lunch bag or can contact Kristy.

Bring your bag of 6 FQ’s to the June 8, 2009 Arlington QU meeting.**
Keep your bag anonymous – no names, no markings. Bags will be anonymously swapped with participating members.

Take your bag of tasty fabric “treats” home and begin cooking up a spectacular quilt! You can use any recipe (pattern or design) of your choice.

You must use at least a 6 ½” square of each FQ provided on the front of the quilt. (The 6 ½” square can be divided into smaller pieces.) You can also add fabrics from your own stash.

Quilts can range in size from a wall hanging to a bed quilt - minimum 18”x18”, maximum 115” x 115” (largest acceptable for quilt show).

Complete your quilt by the January 2010 meeting. It must be “quilt show ready” by this meeting in order to show your challenge quilt in the 2010 QU Quilt Show. It would be great to show off our challenge quilts at the show!

Also bring to the Jan 2010 meeting a note card with a small snippet of each of the 6 FQ fabrics you received attached to the card.

Do not show the FQ’s you bring, the FQ’s you receive, or your project at any point in the process to any guild members until the January meeting when we will unveil our scrumptious creations!

Membership and Auction

Membership: Renewals and New

I, your friendly neighborhood treasurer, am now able to accept membership forms and dues! In fact, I already have one completed form and check.

Remember to fill out your membership form from the Big QU web site and bring it in or mail it to me.

If you mail it, please provide a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) so that I can mail your membership card.

Checks should be made out to Arlington QU.

Annual Auction Night
The Annual Auction night is coming up, second Monday in May!

Here are some auction payment guidelines (note this is from a previous email sent in April):

I strongly encourage (request!) that you bring a check and make it out to Arlington QU. Checks make it easier for us to track the money, especially differentiating between membership dues and the auction. It also helps us track down any errors that occur, especially if you note on the check its for membership and auction. Last year we had a few people pay their membership dues twice!

I will not be bringing change, so if you pay with cash it'll need to be exact. If we have change we'll make it. The mini auction went like this and it worked out. (Yes, this is my insidious plot to encourage you to write a check!)

Trust me when I say that checks make things easier for us tracking revenue, i.e. the auction winings, membership, etc. Especially near the end when people are lining up to pay out and we are still keeping track of the on-going auction.

The other thing that'll be helpful is to have your membership form already filled out. I'll bring some membership forms to the remaining meetings.

All this helps to make the auction go smoothly and we appreciate your assistance. Let's have fun!

Remember checks are to be made out to: Arlington QU

Also, remember that the proceeds of the auction go back into the general fund and help to pay for speakers and other activities.

2009 New Windsor Spring Retreat Photos

These are a few of the many wonderful projects worked on during the New Windsor Retreat, February 20-22, 2009.

Margaret is shown with her I Spy quilt ready to be given to a lucky kid.

2009 QU Show Class Registration Open

The class registration for the Quilters Unlimited Show has begun! Check out the Lectures and Classes schedule and register!

Some instructors include: Mark Lipinski, Pam Clarke, Bonnie Hunter, Emily Martin. These are just a few of the instructors that Big QU has lined up.

So if you are interested in jelly roll quilts, machine quilting, applique, improving basic quilt making skills, EQ6, Baltimore style quilts, a mystery quilt - then this show is for you.

Photographing Quilts For Quilt Show

It is time to bring in those beauties to be photographed for the show. The QU quilt show will be June 5-7, 2009 at the Dulles Expo Center.

Bev will be at our bees and monthly meeting with camera in hand. At the Monday bees, Feb. 2 and 16, she will arrive around 7:30 p.m. At our monthly meeting, Feb. 9, Bev will be there around 7:00.

If you have any questions about photographing your quilt, call Bev. If you have other questions about getting your quilt in the show, call Beth.

Chapter Project: Ronald McDonald House Quilts

Gladys, our VP, is heading up a new project to make two quilts for Ronald McDonald House at Inova Fairfax Hospital from batik fabrics. Marie is assisting by collecting blocks at Monday night bee and showing off what we've done.

The goal is to make two quilts as each room as two beds. A light aqua blue fabric will be furnished to us for the backing. Members of the Thursday Bee have already made several blocks and Marie will bring these to Monday night bee to display.

Each block you make will have 2 contrasting or co-coordinating fabrics and will finish to a rectangle 10 1/2 " long and 9 1/2 " wide.

To make one block: Cut 2 pieces of fabric #1 10 1/2" x 4 1/4". Cut 1 piece of fabric #2 10 1/2" x 2 ". Join the three pieces with the 2 " strip running down the middle.

(Yes that is a 1/4" measurement for fabric #1!)

To make many blocks: (and we encourage you to make many as we will need 180 blocks) Cut several different batiks a10 1/2 " x 10 1/2". Then cut a 2" strip off each piece and set aside. Cut the remaining 10 1/2" x 8 1/2" blocks in half lengthwise creating 2 rectangles 10 1/2 " x 4 1/4". Join these two matching rectangles with a contrasting 2" strip from your pile.

The most important dimension is the 10 1/2" length. Don't worry too much if your blocks iron out a little less that 9 1/2" in width -- this will not pose a problem when we join the blocks.

The blocks are easy to make and we hope everyone will participate. Bring them to Monday Bee, bring them to the February meeting, we will keep collecting blocks until we have enough to join the tops.

Sit N Sew This Saturday

Just a reminder that the Sit-N-Sew is this Saturday, January 31 from 10:30 AM - 3:30 PM at Goodwin House. We are meeting in the Auditorium.

This is a good opportunity to work on a project. Because we are in the Board Room there will not be any tables available for basting quilts. We should be moving back to the Auditorium in the Fall once Goodwin House completes the project they are working on.

Its also a good time to work on our new chapter project for Ronald McDonald's House (see the next entry).

Bring your own lunch, or walk to Giant and visit their salad bar or deli counter.

December Pot Luck

We had a grand time at the December pot luck! Lots of good food and fellow quilters.

We had great entertainment from the Too Quirky Quilters, Kim Fess and Rebecca Heinz. They provided us some songs about quilting, showed some beautiful quilts, and provided lots of comedy. Lots of laughs were had by all and I saw a number of heads nodding to the comic routines involving smuggling fabric and tools under our spouses' noses. Of course one can never have too much fabric!

We also had a silent auction of some fabrics and other quilting goodies. We made $353.00.

A request was made of Kath's Hominy casserole. Here it is:

2 16-oz cans of hominy (rinsed off and broken apart by hand)

1 16-oz. cans of corn (I used a 32 oz bag of frozen, thawed in the microwave)

1 c sour cream (and I added a cup of heavy cream [could use yogurt], whipped with 3 tbs of horseradish)

2 4-oz cans of green chiles

1 lb Monterey Jack cheese, grated

Heat oven to 400 deg
Butter a large casserole dish (mine was 9x 13)
Layer the ingredients in the order given, to make 2 complete layers.
bake at 400 for 1 hour to brown cheese. (I baked for only 45 minutes)

Kath reports that the origin of this recipe is the Baltimore Sun, but she has made some modifications to the original recipe. She also reports that it is a very tasty leftover!

Also, the third fabric for the Round Robin was released. I'll try and get a photo of it up soon.

November Meeting Featuring Sandra Smith

Our November meeting was a lot of fun. Sandra Smith was our guest speaker. She had lots to show and tell. Truly a spectacular show and an inspirational speaker!

Apple Cake Recipe

Monday Nights bee had a people requesting the Apple Cake recipe from Trudi.
Here it is in all its glory!

4 cups apples – chopped and peeled (approximately 4 apples)

¾ cups oil

1 cup nuts

2 cups sugar

2 eggs

2 tsp. cinnamon

2 tsp. baking soda

2 cups flour

Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Pour into greased Bundt pan or 2 quart casserole. Bake at 375 for one hour. Shift confectioner's sugar on top or serve with whipped cream, frosting, or ice cream.

Women in Recovery Program

Mysterious Round Robin

The "Mysterious Round Robin" is a hybrid of a Round Robin and a Mystery Quilt. We have divided into groups of 8-10. At our September meeting the groups received the first of 3 fat quarters which are to be incorporated into the quilt. The groups will devise and make a center block, group of blocks, or medallion for their quilt. This will be brought to the October meeting and shared. In October the groups will receive the next fat quarter, and in November the final fat quarter. The quilt tops will be shared at the December meeting, and completed for the February meeting. These quilts will be auctioned off at the May auction with the understanding that first they will be displayed at the QU Quilt Show.

The purpose is to give us an opportunity to get to know each other better by working on a project together. We have formed these groups to be geographically close for the most part. Groups will have time to meet for a portion of the meetings September - December.

Project Linus

We are still actively recruiting folks to make small quilts for really sick kids in hospitals. This is a great way to 1)practice, 2)experiment and 3) use up stashed fabrics, so you have room for more! You can either turn the quilts in at the Cotton Patch in Fairfax, or bring to Laura Savage, who attends almost every bee and meeting. Laura kindly volunteered to accumulate a stack and deliver them. If you bring them to us, our Chapter can give you a receipt to deduct your material costs as a charitable expense. (My tax man says that's the best you can do, but if anyone knows how we could deduct the value of the quilt, I'd love to hear about it!)

Sit-N-Sew: August

We were happy to be back in the auditorium! We had much more room to work. This month members were working on two projects: Women In Recovery and the 2009 QU Show raffle quilt. Also, others worked on their own projects.

I'm still learning about my new camera and photography in general, so bear with me if the pictures don't look quite right! Everyone was beautiful! Blame the photographer, but please be nice! ;-)

Women in Recovery Quilts

This project was to create quilts to celebrate women graduating from the drug treatment program. Just as a reminder, these quilts are due to Kath at the September's Birthday Bee which is held tomorrow!

Women In Recovery Guidelines

Brief instructions/guidelines for the "Women in Recovery" wall hangings. This was the info sent out via Arlington QU email:

But before that day, we have a final opportunity to help create the inspirational wall hangings we promised for the "Women in Recovery" project. You have two options for this good work: you can make one on your own (just a small thing - maybe 20 X 20 inches), or show up for Sit-N-Sew next weekend and help the group. These must be completed by Sept 1, (bring 'em to Bee) so they can be presented to these deserving ladies. Don't miss the chance to give someone else a boost.

This Saturday is the Sit-N-Sew! Then the final projects are due at the September Birthday Bee!

Sit-N-Sew: Project: Women in Recovery

This month's Sit-N-Sew is on Saturday, August 30th from 10:30 AM - 3:30 PM. This is a good opportunity to work on a project. Because we are in the Board Room there will not be any tables available for basting quilts. We should be moving back to the Auditorium in the Fall once Goodwin House completes the project they are working on.

This is also the third installment of the "Women In Recovery" project spearheaded by Kath Heslop. The previous two Sit-N-Sews had people working in teams to create a quilted wall hanging using fabric scraps that participants had brought. The wall hangings will be given to women who are participating in a drug recovery program.

This last session will be covering binding and finishing techniques. The finished projects are due by September's Birthday Bee, aka first Monday of the month. The finished projects will be presented on September 5th.

We are meeting in the board room so we'll only have room for about 5 sewing machines.

Bring your own lunch, or walk to Giant and visit their salad bar or deli counter.

What's it like at the Rehobeth Retreat?

Check out these photos from 2007. We stopped at Cottonseed Glory in Annapolis, AND made an expedition to Mares Bears, with a lovely lunch at Lewes. We had the whole B&B to ourselves, so we sat around in our jammies all we wanted. Melissa's is a really lovely B&B, with great rooms and a free happy hour. A good time was had by all!

Arlington QU Rehoboth Fall Retreat

Love the beach? Love quilting? Here's the best of both world's, Arlington QU's Rehoboth Fall Retreat!

It's a weekend of fun, shopping, and quilting, held at a Bed and Breakfast.

It’s likely to be Veteran's Day weekend, and the cost will probably be around $125-200 (depending on number of folks who go). We take over the full house. Cost includes breakfast.

Veteran’s Day is Tuesday Nov 11th, so we’re checking to see if we can do the Saturday-Tuesday stay.

Peanut Butter Pie

Here's the recipe from Laura Savage for the Peanut Butter Pie we had for July's first Monday bee.

Ingredients:
Graham Cracker Crust
8oz package cream cheese or neufchatel.
1/2 cup peanut butter (smooth or crunchy)
1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup milk
1 container cool whip (thawed)

9 in pie pan or 8" x 12" pan

Directions:
Be sure that the cream cheese is at room temperature.
Beat the cream cheese until fluffy.
Beat in the peanut butter and the powdered sugar.
Add in the milk and beat until smooth.
Fold in the cool whip.
Pour into container and put into freezer for at least 4 hours.

Fall Retreat Update

Currently there are 18 people going to the Arlington QU Fall Retreat. However, there is still room for more people. If you are interested be sure to get your $40 deposit check to Lynne Everly by August 1.

Deposit checks should be a check made out to Arlington QU.

July 07 Bee

It's the first bee of the month and that means Birthday Bee! Of course, this means dessert! We had two delicious cakes. One was a warm chocolate cake with chocolate icing. The other, a cool white frosted peanut butter cake! What a delightful contrast!

We do many things at bee, one of those is asking for, receiving, and giving advice on those ongoing projects. Here two members discuss the finer art of color choices, wonder if more blocks need to be made, or discuss the best setting. Its always helpful to have some input.

The other things we do is just hang out and work on a project (quilting, knitting, cross-stitch, embroidery), update the chapter blog, and even review our cell phone messages!

Or just hang out and chat about life, kids, trips, vacations, share herbs, etc...

Just a reminder that deposits for the Fall Retreat are due ASAP! There are still some spaces left.

Arlington QU Fall Retreat

The Arlington QU Fall Retreat is going be held between October 17 until October 19 at the New Windsor Conference Center in Windsor, MD.

Friday: The Board Room opens at 10 AM on Friday. The rooms open at 1 PM on Friday.
Sunday: Room checkout is at 11:00 AM. The Board Room closes at 4 PM.

A deposit of $40.00 is needed ASAP.

Presidential Challenge 2008

It can be extreme in any way you desire: extremely elegant, funky, practical... whatever! But it MUST still be functional.

What Are The Monthly Meetings?

On the second Monday of every month (September through June) we have a larger meeting, usually with a speaker, show-n-tell, and light refreshments. This meeting is held in the Goodwin House auditorium from 7:30-9pm. Guests are welcome to come and see what it's all about.

In the months of December and June we have a potluck dinner. Everyone is asked to bring a dish or dessert to share. We encourage everyone to bring their own plate and utensils to reduce unnecessary waste, but paper plates and plastic utensils are also provided. Come hungry for this!

In May we have our annual auction. This is one of our most exciting events! Members donate new or used quilting related items we auction them off! The money collected goes to Arlington QU. These funds are used to pay for speakers and other quilting related activities that the chapter decides on.

What Is Bee?

Bee is the place to get to know other members, and to get advice and encouragement for those ongoing quilting projects! People are more than willing to give advice. Members' quilting experience ranges from novice to master.

Bee is every Monday from 7:30 PM to 9 pm at the "Top-O-the-West" Room at Goodwin House, near Bailey's Crossroads. There is no Bee on the second Monday of the month between September and June as this is the night for the big Monthly Meeting.

During July and August, we have Bee every Monday - including the second Monday of the month. We enjoy it so much we even have Bee on most holidays, so join the crowd!

The first Monday of the month is Birthday night. We celebrate all the members birthdays for the month with desserts!

Guests are always welcome. We hope you'll take the opportunity to find out more about the organization.
